The spring, recently found in a private estate in Seborga, was a baptismal font used by monks also for irrigation through ducting into the fields. It dates back to before the year 1000, just after the Roman period.
During that time, the triple baptism ritual was customary, consisting of a triple sacrament – which later on was divided into Baptism and Confirmation.
The adult neophyte would take part in this ritual, held between the night of Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday during Roman Christianity. The ritual today still retains some aspects of the ancient one.
Close to ancient olive trees, the font was one of the central points for the first crops such as "MONOCULTIVAR TAGGIASCA" olive tree groves, that is an olive tree variety that crosses from the sea level till 600 metres and can reach a height of 10-12 metre. "Taggiasca" olives and fine extra-virgin Taggiasca olive oil come from this cultivar.
