“Natale in Contrada” ("Christmas in the neighborhood"), scheduled on December 24th and 26th at 8pm in Peveragno is one of the most anticipated Christmas events in the Cuneo area.
Christmas in Contrada, in its twenty-fifth edition, has its roots before Christian times when people every year celebrated Winter Solstice, the victory of light over darkness, the resumption of life and work.
The ancient town of Peveragno every year recreates a not-so-distant past when things were not bought but made and exhibits crafts, whose skills have been passed down for generations; people made bread and nails, ropes and floats, vessels and linens, cheeses and laundry, furniture and pasta, just to name a few.
Christmas in the neighborhood is set in a picturesque natural scenery and hosts more than 400 participants representing about 50 ancient crafts; sheperds, rope makers, blacksmiths, laundresses, carpenters, sharecroppers, sawyers, ironers in their shops and their gear staging a very realistic living nativity scene. There will also be a real family to impersonate Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph.
In addition, visitors will savor delicious local products and recipes: sausage, polenta, cheese, wine and mulled wine, hot chocolate, chocolates, sugar, goffri – a typical Piedmontese recipe similar to waffles - bread, baked apples, potatoes, tripes, apple fritters, tongue with green sauce, etc.
Visitors will also enjoy the theatrical representation "A wish for Christmas" by the Company of Birun and the show "Nouvé frountiero sense" by the Cultural Association Gai Saber to be held at Chiesa della Confraternita. And to end with a blast, the evening of Dec. 26 will display magical fireworks on the Hill of San Giorgio.
Peveragno (Povragn in Piedmont dialect, Pouvranh in Occitan), 560mt above sea level, is in the province of Cuneo close to Chiusa Pesio at the foot of Mount Bisalta and part of the mountain community of the Maritime Alps.
