Giacometti, L'Oeuvre Ultime in Nice

Running from  June 23rd to October 15th 2017 at Galerie Lympia, this is the first exhibition devoted to the works of Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) in Nice. This unique exhibition was specially conceived for the renovated spaces of the former prison of Nice and the Clock Pavilion of the port of Nice, where the new Galerie Lympia is located.

The exhibition shows the last years of the artist's work through fifty major works of his maturity (1960-1965) including his very last ones.

Sculptures, paintings, drawings and lithographs, from the rich collection of the Giacometti Foundation, show the diversity of techniques used by the artist during this decisive period of his career.

The project also relies on a large photographic documentation, partly unpublished, which serves as a scenario for the exhibition. It brings together several masterpieces from that period, including a major painting of the 1960 “Caroline” series, one of the last busts of Lotar (Lotar III, 1965-1966), the painted plaster of the Man half-length (1965), the Great Woman III (1960) and the reconstruction, with the original works, of the sculpture assemblage with a photograph taken by Lotar in Giacometti’s workshop.

Alberto Giacometti (10 October 1901 – 11 January 1966) was a Swiss sculptor, painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He was born in the canton Graubünden's southerly alpine valley Val Bregaglia, as the eldest of four children to Giovanni Giacometti, a well-known post-Impressionist painter. Coming from an artistic background, he was interested in art from an early age.
