Amedeo Modigliani: One of the greatest artists of the 20th century in Genoa

In Genoa, the art of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century: Amedeo Modigliani.
The exhibition will run from March 16^th to July 16^th 2017 at Palazzo Ducale, at the Doge's apartment.

Modigliani (1884-1920) is inextricably linked to the bohemian myth of genius and damned artist.
After completing his classical education in Livorno and Venice, he moved to Paris in 1906, immersing himself in an effervescent cultural climate. Worn down by tuberculosis since childhood, Modigliani tried to hide his fragility with the temporary relief offered by alcohol and drugs, which, nonetheless, didn't have any clouding impact on his curious intelligence.

Without claiming membership to any avant-garde movement, Modigliani pursued a need for purity and newness, a sincerity towards himself in life and art, shown in solid and essential forms.
His early paintings - still linked stylistically to the Toulouse-Lautrec lessons, Cézanne and Picasso - his sculptures’ archetypal solidity astonish for the intensity of their strength. However, it is through portraits and female nudes that Modigliani best expresses his deep sensitivity, capturing the soul of his subjects with an extraordinary plethora of nuances.

The exhibition, curated by Rudy Chiappini, presents a careful selection of works from Italian and European museums and private collections: drawings - an artist's intimate diary, caryatids – his sculpture projects able to combine classical and cubist tones, portraits, and nudes.
