Works created during the short Fauves period are on show at the Annonciade of Saint Tropez until 9th March, 2015.

Fauvism, a type of progressive impressionism, was brought about by a group of modern artists and only lasted from 1905 to 1908.

Led by Henri Matisse, a loosely connected group of artists were described as “Les Fauves” or “wild beasts” by a critic Louis Vauxcelles as a result of their unconventional techniques.

The Fauves committed to vibrant colours as a way of depicting light and space, which is what the genre is mostly renowned for.

Many of the Fauvism characteristics can be seen in Henri Matisse’s Luxe, Calme et Volupté, which he painted in the summer of 1904 whilst in Saint Tropez.

Compositions by the members of Les Fauves can be seen at the Musée de l’Annonciade until 9th March, 2015.
