Knowing the Ocean for achieving Sustainable Development: a conference in Monaco

On April 27th and 28th L’Institut Du Droit Economique De La Mer (Indemer) in Collaboration With The Oceanographic Institute - Foundation Albert I Prince Of Monaco is organizing an international conference on “Knowing the Ocean for achieving Sustainable Development” covering Scientific and legal aspects of marine scientific research activities.

The goal is to open towards a sustainable economy, no longer opposing the development of maritime activities and environmental protection but talking about new means of research. This is what the Institut Du Droit Economique De La Mer (INDEMER) proposes to experts on all the legal, economic, social and environmental issues of marine areas.

Marine scientific research is often dealt with on a sectoral basis, hence this conference is organized to achieve synthesis. It not only brings together research related to activities in the ocean such as fisheries or mineral resources, but it also addresses specific themes regarding the protection of marine environment, such as acidification and micro-plastics.

It also describes the means used to carry out research work (vessels, buoys, satellites). Areas for encouraging effective governance through the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and regional fisheries organizations will also be presented.

This event, under the patronage of S.A.S. Prince Albert II of Monaco, has three main objectives:

1) Develop a link between knowledge of the oceans and economic competitiveness.

2) Promote accessibility of data to policy makers.

3) Creating tools to establish a connection between scientists and politicians.
