The art of Andy Warhol in Genoa

Exactly thirty years after Andy Warhol's death, Palazzo Ducale in Genoa is organizing an exhibition curated by Luca Beatrice named “Warhol pop society”. The exhibition shows about 170 works including paintings, prints, drawings, polaroids, sculptures, objects from private collections, museums, public and private Italian and foreign foundations.

The exhibition – which covers the entire span of activity of the last century’s most famous and popular artist - is built around six components: design, icons, polaroid, portraits, Andy Warhol and Italy, and cinema.

Andy Warhol began the era of contemporary art, to the point that in the art world we can talk of a "Before Andy" and an "After Andy". Andy Warhol was able to identify and anticipate the profound changes of contemporary society, when art began to relate to mass media, goods and consumption.

The exhibition showcases some extraordinary sketches for famous paintings such as the Dollar or Mao; the very famous icons of Marilyn - here present both in the 1967 screen printing and the Four Marilyn canvas, Campbell Soup and Brillo Boxes; portraits of famous people such as Man Ray, Liza Minnelli, Mick Jagger, Miguel Bose as well as some important Italian ones: Gianni Agnelli, Giorgio Armani and Sandro Chia.

An entire section of 90 pieces is dedicated to Polaroid, so used by Andy Warhol to capture celebrities, friends, stars and starlets.
