Brace yourself for the world-famous Nice Carnival!

From February 13th to 28th, 2016 a major event on the French Riviera: the Nice Carnival!

It is one of the largest carnivals in the world, attended by over 1 million visitors, with 18-floats processions, headed by the Carnival King, working their way up to a crescendo of celebrations in Masséna Square. Colourful parades take place day and night, with entertainment provided by over 1,000 musicians and dancers from all over the world.

Not to be missed the elegant Flower Parade which takes place in a unique setting, the Promenade des Anglais. Extravagantly dressed characters throw out mimosas, gerberas, and lilies from floats decorated with the most stunning floral compositions.

The first Flower Parade was held in 1876 when the timid exchanges of flowers bouquets between the visitors and the decorated carriages developed into a prestigious show, now an integral part of Carnival. Today, this event is also a perfect promotion of the Riviera's flowers as 90% of flowers used are produced locally.

Floats are designed on the year's theme in traditional papier mache and also modern techniques; this year's theme is King of Media. This new monarch will highlight the right to freedom of expression.

The three leading floats are the King, the Queen and Carnivalon, their son. Every year, the Carnival Queen and her two successors are nominated. They represent the spirit of the flower parade  and become her ambassadresses for the following year.

On the last night, King Carnival is burnt. Then there’s a wonderful huge firework display to music over the Baie des Anges.
