The Western Italian Riviera registered a record sighting of 30 dolphins at the beginning of this month.

The dolphins have been photographed by a sailor – who also happens to be one of our readers – in the waters off Varigotti (Finale Ligure, Liguria).

“This is the best season for the sightings since it is exactly this time of the year that the dolphins mate,” the sailor – who doesn’t want to be named – explained.

As the photographs show, the dolphins were not al all intimidated by the presence of the sailor’s boat and seemed actually to be enjoying some human company.

It is not the first time dolphins have been sighted in the area, and in the past even a few turtles were spotted by tourists.
