Western Liguria's Parmureli and olive branches at the Vatican

This year, as well as last year, Western Liguria provided the famous 'parmureli' to the Vatican for the important eucharistic celebration of Palm Sunday.

A forgotten tradition resumed in 2003 by consortium 'Il Cammino', 'Parmureli' are one of a kind, simply handmade and tied together, they have been the floral decoration during numerous papal celebrations at the Vatican.

Although usually supplied by Puglia Region, this year, in addition to parmureli, Taggiasca olive branches were provided by municipalities in the Imperia province belonging to the association 'Città dell’Olio'.

About 15 cubic meters of olive branches and 2,300 parmureli, 230 of which big size, were brought to Rome. One big parmurelo, higher than 2 meters, was made specifically for Pope Francis. It all took about 2 months to weave, although the real work began as early as July.
