Nice: Musée Matisse exhibition "Cinematisse" [Video]

It is now agreed to recognize the effects of cinema on all other arts of the twentieth century. Movement, speed, light, perspective are all formal aspects upset by the cinematographic device.

As part of the exhibitions "Nice 2019: "The Odyssey of cinema". Victorine 100 years", till  15 January 2020.

For the first time, the Matisse Museum proposes to explore the links between Henri Matisse and the cinema. An avid spectator, Matisse approaches cinema as entertainment but also thinks of his work in terms of this new form of popular expression. He does not disdain the observation of his practice as a painter through the "temporal lens" that is the camera. In the film of François Campaux (1946), the latter revealed that the dazzlingness of his line was nourished by preparation as much as by improvisation and thought. Matisse met one of the greatest silent filmmakers, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, on a trip to Tahiti. The German filmmaker was preparing Tabou, his ultimate film.

Matisse's interest in dance, wave movement and ornamental repetition reveals that he was obsessed with the "sight" metamorphosis of forms and the search for metaphors to represent the time that is being accomplished. Modern cinema, and more particularly the French New Wave (Jacques Rivette, Eric Rohmer, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Demy, Agnès Varda ...) has elected Henri Matisse as one of his "bosses".
