In the tradition of the great monographs of 20th century artists, in the Grimaldi Forum Monaco ("SuperWarhol" in 2003, "Monaco celebrates Picasso" in 2013 and more recently "Francis Bacon, Monaco and French culture" in 2016), the summer 2019 exhibition will be dedicated to "Dalí, a history of painting",  whose curatorship is by Montse Aguer, director of the Dalí Museums. This retrospective is supported by Fundacion Gala-Salvador Dalí.

In this year of celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the artist's death (1904-1989), the Dalí exhibition, a painting story offers the public an exceptional journey through Dalí's artistic production. The selection brings together paintings, drawings and photographs dated from 1910 to 1983 and allows you to discover the different phases of the artist's creation. Not only does it offer a retrospective view of Dalí's work, but it also reveals how the painter inscribed himself in the history of 20th century painting. The public will therefore be able to discover the various phases of its creation and to recognize the imprint of the various painters who have influenced him and to whom he pays tribute.

Under the influence of Gala, in the 40s and 50s, Dali dedicated himself to the observation of classicism in his paintings, rather through works by Renaissance artists. The culmination of this passion for classical culture is reflected in his literary production, particularly in the "50 secrets of Craft magic", his treatise on painting published in 1948. Shortly thereafter, in 1951, Dali reaffirmed his admiration for the Renaissance, classicism and religious painting in the "Mystical Manifesto". This is the beginning of a new period of creation: nuclear mystico.

Dali has an incredible ability to anticipate and is able to combine tradition and innovation. He is interested in science, the third dimension and the optical effects that give life to his stereoscopic paintings.

In the last phase of his creation in the 1980s, Dali is already ill, his painting is full of evocation and his reflections about death, immortality and his passion for painting. A final chapter will be devoted to the influence of the great masters of art history in the artistic conception of Dalí. In 50 magical secrets to paint Dali publishes a painting with a comparative analysis of the most extraordinary painters in the history of art. In his ranking are Vermeer from Delft, Raphael, Velazquez, Leonardo da Vinci and Picasso who are the most voted painters.

To this date, the selection includes about a hundred works: paintings, drawings and photographs, mostly from the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation in Figueres and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.
