A Summer Solstice hike

Let’s celebrate the arrival of Summer with an easy hike from San Romolo to Monte Caggio.

Departing late afternoon to avoid the heat, the hike follows mule tracks and trails to get to Mount Caggio where participants will have a packed dinner and wait for sunset on the longest day of the year, when the earth reaches its culmination with respect to the sun (for the Northern Hemisphere). Participants will learn about ritual connected to Summer Solstice and also about excavations that brought to light a structure used for ancient religious ceremonies.

The loop features a longer climb and a quick descent to get back before dark.

It is advisable to bring a torch for the final part of the descent as it goes through the woods.

Meeting point: 5.30pm at the Old station in Sanremo or at 6pm in San Romolo

Hike difficulty: 300 meters difference in altitude. 3 hour hike.
