A pack of about 40 wild horses has been roaming freely, through pastures and beech trees, in Aveto Regional Natural Park, in Liguria. Coming from a small group whose owner died about fifteen years ago, these horses have survived adapting to wild life. Mixing with bard-horses, which have spent summers in these mountains for decades, has allowed the reproduction and birth of new families who have never had any contact with man in the last decade.

Their behavior in nature is quite comparable to that of the Mustangs of American prairies and the Przewalski horses of Mongolia. The study of the behavior of horses within the herd is of increasing interest, and there is no better way to understand the equine ethology than observing them in the wild.

This flock perfectly adapts throughout the seasons, following the teachings given by mother nature, and therefore represents a unique resource in Italy, also in relation to the environment and conservation of the habitat.

In 2012 the project "WILD HORSEWATCHING – I Cavalli Selvaggi dell’Aveto”® was created with the purpose of spreading this incredible reality.

Horsewatching is an opportunity to observe behavior in wilderness and at the same time gives visibility to these animals making them a resource for the land they live in. The project, in fact, provides guided tours by an experienced naturalist and equestrian guide.

Two horsewatching trips are scheduled in June and, upon request, in July and August (tel. 3473819395, e-mail: icavalliselvaggidellaveto@gmail.com); Then five trips in September, three in October and two in November. Participants will also be able to taste local products at a farm or Osteria.
