Turin has made quite the news in the last months, and this time the reason this beautiful city is becoming even more popular is rather unexpected.

Turin, capital of Piedmont region, the homeland of Fassona meat – one of the best kind of meat in the country and one the region prides itself on – is becoming Italy’s first vegetarian city.

The welcomed choice toward vegetarianism comes after new mayor Chiara Appendino’s annoucement of turning it into Italy’s first “vegetarian city” earlier this year. The proposals include introducing a weekly meat-free day and teaching schoolchildren about animal welfare and ecology.

Turin has now a vegetarian map for tourists with more than 30 restaurants, delis, cafés, and shops serving vegan and vegetarian food – definitely a significant number for an Italian city this size.

The city’s change of trend has not gone unnoticed as both The Guardian and BBC have picked up on that writing an article and dedicating part of a travel show on it.

Here you can find a list of Turin's 10 best vegetarian restaurants
