Hiking and finding wild orchids in Monte Vecchio

On Saturday May 21st a great, challenging albeit very rewarding hike: looking for the first wild orchids while enjoying breathtaking views from the summit and along the way.

The hike begins in Limone Piemonte and climbs on a steep path on the south slope of Mount Vecchio to Colle dell'Arpiola. Here the hike continues along the grassy ridge that leads to the top.

A spectacular view stretches from the Ligurian Alps to Monviso (in clear weather even further, until Valle d'Aosta region), through Bisalta, Colle di Tenda with its peaks, Mount Argentera (the queen of the Gesso Valley) and long stretched Vermenagna valley.

Mount Vecchio is a symbol of Limone Piemonte. From its slopes one is able to observe wild mountain fauna (deer, wild boar, badger, fox) and especially large birds of prey (golden eagle, harrier, buzzard) that exploit alpine grassland's upward air currents.

With a vertical drop of 900m, this hike is best suited for experienced hikers and it lasts all day (estimated arrival time 5pm).
